Movie review: Satyagraha

Just came out after watching the film and the best part is certainly the performances of all the characters. Amitabh is par excellence in his role as a non-violent satyagrahi and keeps beating himself film after film. Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor, Manoj Bajpayee, Arjun Rampal, Amrita Rao have all acted well.

Though actors play their roles nicely but you will find there is no innovation/change in the acting or even appearance of Manoj Bajpayee and Arjun Rampal. They appear as if they have come straight from the sets of Rajneeti (add Arakshan for Manoj) with the same clothes on. They have failed to do anything new but still played their roles quite well.

That said, I am more confused whether or not I liked the film. I am sure I didn’t dislike it. I loved the acting, direction and camera work (barring one place where the cameraman forgot to remove red stains from the lens which were visible).

But is it an issue based movie? It is a story about the ‘national’ level ‘revolution’ which brought the aam aadmi on the streets protesting about corruption or is it a film that aims to do good business?

The story of the film is the very recent phenomenon that took India by storm with Anna’s agitation in New Delhi. Each of us know every shot of the film. People clap, get happy and get euphoric when they see an extension of themselves doing something on the screen.

It brought about a problem and gave the solution as well. And again, solution is also known to us. Kejriwal will fight elections.

The film will do a good business. It will not affect too many as it is an entertainer. It doesn’t force you to think. It just plays a tape that has already run its course. It was like watching an already watched movie but faces have changed.

So if the aim was to generate some opinion, it has failed as the mass is saturated with this kind of opinion. All of us know corruption is an issue. The film also portrays the same but does it move us to think about it? No. We have all thought about it a hundred times and would keep thinking all the day, but this movie won’t be a catalyst.

So, go and watch it just as a film. Some good acting is there but don’t enter to get surprised, it just won’t.
